UK HealthTech Industrial Councils
Driving innovation and growth in HealthTech and diagnostics through industry-government collaboration
The HealthTech Industrial Council and Diagnostics Industrial Council bring together executive leaders from industry to drive innovation, investment, and economic growth in the UK’s thriving health technology and diagnostics sectors.
Growth is a key mission for the current UK Government – with a new 10-year industrial strategy to support high-growth sectors including life sciences. The UK has incredible strengths within the HealthTech and diagnostics sectors, including a world-leading academic base, a highly skilled workforce and innovative start-ups. In order to grow and realise its potential success, close collaboration and support is required between the industry and the UK Government.
Why HealthTech and diagnostics matter
£13.5 billion GVA contribution from MedTech to the UK economy.
UK is a global leader in R&D, manufacturing, and medical technology innovation.
4,100 businesses accounting for 52% of life sciences employment.
However, HealthTech and diagnostics receive less investment than markets with similar impact, which limits growth, the ability to meet complex challenges and seize key opportunities arising from new technologies. Current global healthcare challenges such as rising incidence of chronic disease, anti-microbial resistance, access inequalities and overburdened healthcare systems also can’t be solved by organisations acting in isolation.
The HealthTech Industrial Council and Diagnostics Industrial Council have been convened to address these issues by bringing together global industrial leaders to build a stronger future for UK HealthTech. The Councils work closely with key UK Government bodies, including the Office for Life Science, Innovate UK, and the NHS.
Our mission
The HealthTech and Diagnostics Industrial Councils exist to:
-
Be the single voice of industry to promote the impact of HealthTech technology development and manufacturing.
-
To deliver a clear vision for HealthTech in the UK.
-
Support the government to build and progress a UK HealthTech strategy.
-
Deliver proposals to government for co-investments.
How we work
The councils convene executive leaders from the UK’s top medical technology, diagnostics, and life sciences organisations to:
- Identify critical challenges and opportunities.
- Develop policy recommendations and funding strategies.
- Support public-private investment initiatives.
The council meets four times a year, with the inaugural meetings held January 2025. In attendance were representatives from including the Office for Life Science, Innovate UK, and the NHS.
