Substantial investment revolutionise print & packaging
The new initiative will house a range of traditional print processes and curing equipment, including UV and conventionally drying flexo, litho, digital and screen units. The print equipment will link into advanced converting, and pick and place equipment to attach components directly to printed devices at production speeds
It is possible to print electronic circuits through existing print infrastructure. The creation of the facility opens up a huge opportunity for developing entirely new printed products that can incorporate printed moving displays, printed batteries and printed sensors. Putting electronics into print, packaging or point of sale materials can enable a true cross-media experience directly linking traditional print with digital technologies. This will lead to the creation of a whole new generation of value-added products for the wider print and packaging industry.
The Centre will raise awareness of these emerging technologies across the relevant industries and be positioned to deliver cost-effective access to expertise, materials and equipment. As well as employing skilled print-industry staff to run the equipment, PETEC will work with leading UK technology partners to offer clients unrivalled experience and advice across all development stages, from concept, design, specification and prototyping within the new facility through to full-scale production on the client’s own equipment.
This landmark facility, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) will be based within CPI’s existing site in Sedgefield, Co Durham and will be fully operational early 2012.

About CPI The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is a key part of the Government’s first elite technology innovation centre, focusing in the area of high value manufacturing. It offers market and technology expertise along with cutting-edge development assets to help its public and private sector clients build and prototype the next generation of products, processes and services quickly and efficiently, and with minimal risk.
CPI has designed and established national technology centres in Printable Electronics and Industrial Biotechnology. The centres are equipped with development laboratories, prototyping facilities and pilot plants that enable clients to prove and scale up processes from the laboratory stage through to commercial reality. There are commercially experienced scientists and engineers on site to offer expertise and guidance. CPI also offers a multi-disciplined team who work together on project management, investment and market opportunities to ensure each business fulfils its potential.
CPI is the only open access centre of its kind in the UK with such an extensive combination of equipment and specialist knowledge serving the process industries. CPI has designed an environment that fits the needs of companies whatever their size and demands, and consistently delivers customers’ requirements, on time and to budget.
PETEC provides R&D support and strategic partnerships to assist organisations in realising delivery of technological targets. PETEC has initially focussed on printable semiconductor technology for Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFT), displays, Organic Solid State Lighting (OSSL),and Organic Photovoltaics (OPV). The new initiative extends their offering into the creative sector – including graphic, digital, service and product designers and into the print & packaging production industry.
