Professor Judith A K Howard CBE FRS

Judith Howard is currently Professor of Chemistry at Durham University, Chairman and founding Director of the University spinout company OlexSys.

She has spent much of the last 25 years developing novel instrumentation for unusual diffraction experiments and has been a regular user of central facilities in the UK and abroad for the collection of complementary data in extreme sample environments.

She has been a member of the Science Advisory Board for the European Science Foundation and currently is a member of the Board of the ‘Fondation de la Maison de la Chimie’ in Paris.

Judith has served on numerous University committees, appointing panels and Senate and was the Chairman of the Chemistry Department and the Director of the Biophysical Sciences Institute (BSI) at Durham.

Also Judith has chaired or served on many Royal Society committees, including Council, Chair of the Chemistry Fellowship panel and Prizes & Awards and been a Trustee of the Royal Society as a Council member (twice), for the Pension fund for 7 years and currently for the Royal Society Trading Company.

She is founder and honorary member of the British Crystallographic Association (BCA), having served as its Secretary and President, and in 1987 co-founded the very successful biennial BCA intensive teaching schools, which still run in Durham. Judith has played senior roles in organising many successful international scientific meetings in the UK and abroad during the past 30 years.
