About Next-generation Cancer Diagnostics

Accelerating earlier cancer detection and precision medicine through multi-omics, AI and next-generation diagnostics

The Next Generation Cancer Diagnostics (NG-Dx) programme is bringing together industry, clinicians, researchers, regulatory bodies, patient groups and technology partners to overcome the barriers preventing earlier cancer detection and faster adoption of innovative diagnostic technologies.

Backed by £5 million funding from the UK Government’s Office for Life Sciences, the programme is creating the collaborations, evidence and frameworks needed to translate breakthrough innovations into clinical practice.

Our collaborative workstreams

The programme focuses on three priority workstreams that were identified through consultation with experts from industry, healthcare, academia and government, and further refined during the inaugural Next Generation Cancer Diagnostics workshop in June 2026. Together, they address the key barriers limiting the development and adoption of innovative cancer diagnostics and provide the greatest opportunity to accelerate earlier diagnosis and improve patient outcomes.

- Cell-free DNA: Improving sample preparation, standardisation and analytical workflows to increase confidence in liquid biopsy technologies.
- Proteomics: Developing robust, reproducible proteomic workflows that support earlier disease detection and precision medicine.
- Multi-omics Data Architecture: Creating interoperable, AI-enabled data frameworks that integrate genomic, proteomic and clinical information to support better diagnostic decision making.

The programme brings together organisations from across the cancer diagnostics ecosystem to tackle shared challenges and accelerate innovation.
