The challenge

Current estimates suggest that 1 in 4 people are likely to experience a stroke during their lifetime, and around 50% of stroke survivors experience moderate-to-severe problems using one of their arms.

Regular physiotherapy can help those with milder symptoms but for those who are more severely affected, symptoms can worsen over time. Stroke is the leading cause of disability worldwide as survivors can struggle to recover.

CPI worked with June to develop its wearable stroke rehabilitation prototype through our Sonnet programme. We collaborated to make the technology portable – reducing its bulk from the size of a backpack to a wristband and integrating a rechargeable Bluetooth-enabled battery. We also made it safer and more energy efficient by reducing the power required to stimulate muscles.

Thanks to the early work undertaken with CPI, we’ve now been able to test and further refine our devices to be fully compliant and ready for at home use. We are excited by the prospects of changing lives, building the first foundational layer of neural strength, and enabling millions of survivors worldwide to access the treatment they deserve.

How CPI helped

  • Replaced the actuator with one that uses less power to produce mechanical impulses, making it safer and more efficient.

Impact

CPI helped advance June's stroke rehabilitation technology from an early-stage concept to a wearable, portable prototype, reducing the size of the system from a backpack to a wristband while improving safety, usability and energy efficiency. The project also combined mechanical stimulation with an audible cue, creating a more practical solution for continual rehabilitation.

June's technology has the potential to address the health inequities that currently exist for those with moderate-to-severe impairments following a stroke, enabling them to access rehabilitation and recover lost movement. This has the potential to be life-changing, with positive physical, social and economic outcomes for people affected by stroke and brain injury. In addition, its data collection capabilities could contribute valuable insights into continual rehabilitation methods and future connected healthcare technologies.

The prototype developed with CPI provided an important foundation for June's continued growth. Since completing the project, the company has advanced from a TRL3 prototype to a TRL8 pre-production device and is now undertaking clinical validation in partnership with the Queen Square Institute of Neurology and University College London Hospitals.

June has also secured significant support to accelerate development, including an NIHR i4i FAST award and more than £515,000 in additional venture capital investment. In 2026, founder Dr Laura Salisbury was recognised with the Innovate UK Women in Innovation Award, highlighting the company's progress towards bringing its technology to patients.

Looking ahead, June is preparing for a full clinical study and is finalising its production-ready device ahead of transfer to manufacture and the creation of its first trial-ready batch. These milestones represent an important step towards making innovative stroke rehabilitation more widely accessible to the people who need it most.
