CPI will lead a major new innovation programme designed to accelerate the commercialisation of advanced materials technologies across the north-east, following the announcement of £23.7 million in government funding for the region.
The funding, awarded through the UK Government's Local Innovation Partnerships Fund (LIPF), will support four flagship projects aimed at driving innovation-led growth across the north-east. The programme is expected to unlock a further £55 million in private investment, create hundreds of high-value jobs and strengthen the region's position as a leading destination for science, technology and innovation.
As part of the investment, CPI will lead the North East Vision for High Value Materials Innovation Acceleration, a collaborative programme bringing together two Catapults, the north-east's four universities and a network of high-growth businesses.
The initiative will help accelerate the development and scale-up of next-generation materials technologies in strategically important sectors including semiconductors, battery systems and low-carbon alternatives. By connecting industry, academia and innovation infrastructure, the programme aims to help businesses bring new products and services to market faster while attracting further investment into the region.
The announcement was made by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and coincides with Innovate UK's Innovation Forum: North East, which brings together regional leaders, businesses and investors to explore how innovation can unlock economic growth across the region.
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, said:
The north-east is at the forefront of next generation technologies. Our new programme will turbocharge innovation in north-east England, boosting investment in research and development, and accelerating the delivery of our Local Growth Plan.
This programme brings together our world-class universities with some of our most innovative, cutting-edge businesses, collaboration that will deliver hundreds of good-quality jobs for local people, major private sector investment to benefit our region’s economy, around 90 new products to market and wider benefits including new facilities and growth across the supply chain. This is great news for innovation in the region.

The North East Vision for High Value Materials Innovation Acceleration is one of four projects selected for support through the programme. The other projects include initiatives focused on clean chemicals, carbon-negative construction materials, and the advancement of future technologies in areas such as space and fusion energy.
The Local Innovation Partnerships Fund is a £500 million UK Government programme delivered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The fund is designed to strengthen regional innovation economies by supporting partnerships between businesses, research organisations and local leaders, helping regions build on their existing strengths and attract additional public and private investment.
By leading the North East Vision for High Value Materials Innovation Acceleration programme, CPI will play a central role in helping transform breakthrough research into commercial opportunities, supporting business growth and reinforcing the North East's reputation as one of the UK's most innovative regions.
