The challenge
Founded by podiatrists David Barton and Heather Smart, Kaydiar is a Cardiff Metropolitan University spin-out developing technology to support management of soft connective and chronic musculoskeletal foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis, rheumatoid arthritic changes and help prevent diabetic foot ulcers.
Diabetic foot ulcers alone cost the NHS more than £1 billion annually. This clinical and financial burden creates a clear need for more effective preventative solutions.
Since its formation in 2018, Kaydiar has aimed to become a leading provider of pressure-management technology. Its goal is to help prevent and treat pressure-related wounds, improve patient outcomes and reduce pressure on healthcare services.
Kaydiar approached CPI in 2022, when its proprietary ProMorph technology was at an early proof-of-concept stage. The concept used a mouldable thermoplastic to create customised wearable devices. Kaydiar needed multidisciplinary expertise to develop the material, integrate supporting technologies and prepare the product for manufacture.
How CPI helped
Supported regulatory pathway planning.
Created initial product prototypes.
Conducted risk assessments and pre-compliance testing
Designed and tested an application to present product data to clinicians and explore future integration with NHS systems or health insurers’ databases.
Researched flexible, mouldable printed heaters, sensors, control electronics and the product interface.
Achievements
Manufactured a batch of 50 units for trials.
Progression from TRL2 to TRL7, taking ProMorph from an early concept to a pre-clinical manufacturing stage.
Development and testing of a novel thermoplastic.
Production of functional prototypes ready for evaluation by NHS clinicians.
Secured funding to expand Kaydiar’s product portfolio, supported by CPI’s bid-development team.
Impact
Now based in Swansea, Kaydiar sits on the cusp of its mission to help improve patient outcomes while alleviating financial pressures on healthcare systems caused by foot ulcers and connective tissue and chronic musculoskeletal foot conditions.
The company's smart wearable composite is designed to contour to any anatomy without manufacturing equipment, enabling rapid customisation and same-day prescription delivery. It also has the potential for vast application expansion into sports medicine, veterinary, and surgical markets and can support remote patient monitoring by collecting and analysing patient compliance data in real time. This helps tailor treatment plans and assists in tailoring health insurance premiums.
With CPI's support, the ProMorph project has moved from concept to a proven product ready for clinical trials with prototypes that have been demonstrated successfully with NHS clinicians and individuals using the devices.
Kaydiar is now seeking a manufacturing partner to scale production for clinical trials and support its planned soft launch in late 2026, subject to clinical and regulatory milestones.
