PFAS alternatives: reformulate, validate and scale with confidence

We help you develop, test and scale PFAS-free materials, formulations and processes.

PFAS are used across a wide range of products because they deliver a combination of properties that can be difficult to replicate, including water and oil repellency, chemical resistance, durability and thermal stability. As regulatory requirements and customer expectations evolve, businesses are under increasing pressure to reduce or remove PFAS without compromising product performance.

Moving away from PFAS is rarely as simple as replacing one ingredient with another. Alternative materials may require changes to formulations, processing conditions, manufacturing methods or even product design.

CPI brings together formulation expertise, materials science, analytical testing and scale-up capabilities to help organisations develop and validate practical alternatives, from early-stage material selection through to pilot-scale and pre-commercial development.

The challenge of moving beyond PFAS

PFAS have been used because they can deliver multiple performance characteristics within a single material or formulation. Replacing them can therefore involve much more than identifying a substitute.

For many applications, PFAS-free alternatives may need to balance performance, durability, manufacturability, cost and sustainability. What works at laboratory scale may also behave differently when introduced into an existing manufacturing process.

This creates challenges across the innovation journey:

  • Performance: alternatives may not provide the same combination of repellency, durability or chemical resistance.

  • Reformulation: changing one component can affect the performance and stability of the wider system.

  • Testing and validation: organisations need confidence that alternatives meet the required specifications and end-use requirements.

  • Scale-up: materials and processes that work in the laboratory may require further optimisation before they can be manufactured consistently.

  • Supply chains: suitable alternative materials and compatible suppliers may be difficult to identify and qualify.

  • Commercial risk: reformulation can require investment in development, testing, qualification and manufacturing changes.

The transition away from PFAS is therefore not simply a materials substitution challenge. It's a formulation, validation and scale-up challenge.

From PFAS replacement to commercially viable solutions

CPI can support your PFAS transition across the development journey, helping you move from identifying potential alternatives to demonstrating their performance and readiness for scale.

Our approach can include:

Defining performance requirements

Understand the role PFAS plays in your product and identify the critical performance requirements that an alternative needs to deliver.

Why work with CPI?

Replacing PFAS can require decisions across materials selection, formulation, processing, testing and manufacturing. CPI brings these capabilities together, helping organisations address the technical challenges that sit between an alternative working in the laboratory and a solution that can be manufactured and used in the real world.
