CPI helps fuel coolant firm Mayhems' global expansion

Mayhems Solutions Ltd is an SME developer and manufacturer of nano-fluid coolants based in Darlington, County Durham. Over the past seven years the company has developed from a start-up with very little cash investment, to a world leader in the manufacture of nano-coolant for use in high-end computers and servers.

Motivated by the ambition to offer superior products at a lower price, Mayhems approached CPI to help them develop a novel cooling fluid that would achieve better cooling performance than those available on the market at that time. CPI worked with Mayhems to provide process scale-up expertise, and through characterisation, help them understand how to improve their product by significantly increasing heat removal performance. Working with CPI allowed the company to optimise and concentrate their supply, allowing them to import approximately 30% less of their raw materials from overseas, boost in-house production and source more UK-based products. Approximately 98% of their nano-fluid ingredients are now sourced from within the UK.

Since working with CPI in 2013, their achievements have been remarkable. Mayhems now manufacture and sell 210 products in both the UK domestic market, with 95% of their production exported overseas to markets such as the United States, China and Taiwan. Their product range has increased through the application of underpinning knowledge gained through their work with CPI to develop unique complementary products, such as non-leaching PVC tubing. They service the full supply chain, operating as an OEM supplier to supplier to many companies who develop cooling systems, as well as distributors, retailers and end consumers via their website. In addition to this they won the 2016 North East Business Award for Innovation.

They have grown from a starting staff of one, to four full time employees, and manage the R&D, manufacture and distribution of their products from their base in Darlington in the North East of England, which has grown from bench scale to shipping over 1000 litres of coolant per week. The company are now looking to raise funds for the next phase of expansion which will allow them to bring production fully-in-house and increase both production and distribution, as well as extend the product line to include market applications such as solar panel, automotive, and household cooling.

  • Working with CPI we were able to significantly improve our nano-coolant and really understand how our chemical formulations work. A lot of what we do is directly impacted by this, for example, the knowledge we gained around our products and the ingredients we use. The repercussions of the work we did together are absolutely massive; our turnover has quadrupled. The knowledge of our product and the know-how we gained from CPI has allowed us to optimise our coolants and, in the process, understand the fundamentals to allow us to carry on developing and formulating on our own. We got a lot more out of working with CPI than we ever would have thought.
