Why this role is important for CPI’s work

CPI is offering an exciting opportunity to be part of our apprenticeship programme. 

The role is designed to equip you with the skills you need to tackle a variety of chemical engineering challenges alongside working with state-of-the-art facilities, with the industry’s leading engineers, scientists, and commercialisation specialists.

Working at the National Formulation Centre in Sedgefield, you will be responsible for supporting laboratory operations to enable fellow engineers and scientists to focus on the design and technical delivery of projects. 

Duties of the role include (but are not limited to) the below:

  • To use fundamentals of chemical engineering principles to implement and develop new processes and to support product development.
  • With the guidance from the project technical leads and or line manager, to be proactive in identifying and supporting engineering solutions to challenging problems and propose innovative ideas.
  • To prepare for and perform laboratory tasks using the appropriate scientific techniques, procedures and methods of relevance to the activities of the laboratory. 
  • To complete the training of using common analytical instrument, work autonomously to analyse, interpret and evaluate engineering data and present the results of laboratory work and problem solving clearly and concisely in written and oral form. 
  • To be responsible for providing clearly documented records of technical data, methodologies, calculations and software use in an agreed format.

What will this apprenticeship offer me?

We are offering the opportunity to study as a Chemical Engineering Apprentice where you will develop professional-level, job specific skills while studying towards your degree and earning a salary. Incorporated into this is our Professional Skills Development Programme, giving you the opportunity to work alongside others within CPI towards achieving specific targets on a social action project. 

By the end of the apprenticeship, you will be qualified with a BEng in Chemical Engineering, as well as being equipped with industry experience.

The person we are seeking

Eligibility

To be eligible for our degree level apprenticeship programme you will need:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 9 – 4 (equivalent to A*-C), including English Language, Mathematics and a Scientific Subject.
  • Must hold or be predicted to achieve 3 A‑levels (or equivalent e.g. BTEC National Certificate or level 3 apprenticeship). Typical entry requirements for college leavers are three A levels in Maths, Chemistry, and Physics (ABB or above) but consideration will be given to other combinations of education and engineering experience in consultation with employers.
  • This programme would suit either college leavers with appropriate qualifications who could be hired straight into a degree apprenticeship, or existing employees such as technicians and operators who have shown an interest and aptitude for an engineering role.

The Person

We are looking for a self-motivated, reliable candidate who can organise workload to meet both departmental objectives and learning outcomes. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to manage time effectively. It is important that the successful candidate can take responsibility for personal development, demonstrating commitment to learning and self-improvement. The candidate will also have experience of IT packages, in particular Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience working within a laboratory environment in a multi-disciplinary team is an advantage.
