Why this role is important for CPI’s work
CPI has exciting opportunities for a number of enthusiastic, team-orientated Scientists and Senior Scientists to contribute to the development and delivery of ongoing and future project work within the established Device Technology team based at NETPark, Sedgefield.
The multidisciplinary Device Technology team is at the forefront of innovation in diverse fields including sensors, MedTech, wearables, and batteries. We work to assist companies looking to bring new products to market; from researching novel technologies, developing early-stage concepts, and building prototypes to upscaling processes for pre-manufacturing readiness.
Some exciting recent projects the Device Technology team has worked on are: In-situ diagnostic for long term patients monitoring , Printed Sensor for Bovine TB, and Wearable technology!
The Roles
Reporting to the Principal Scientist — Device Technology, you will conduct state-of-the-art research, develop new processes, and fabricate a range of sensor devices for HealthTech applications to the delivery and realisation of ongoing and future project work in line with the Device Technology team and HealthTech business unit requirements.
For both the Scientist and Senior Scientist roles, it is essential you have good knowledge, experience, and understanding of:
- the principles and practice of printing sensors for wearables such as strain sensors, pressure sensors, and electrochemical sensors
- the principles and practice of optical biosensors for HealthTech applications
- sensor system design, materials selection, sensor functional design, sensor fabrication, and sensor test and validation.
- field-effect transistors device architecture development & characterisation for sensor application
- screen printing, slot-die coating, spin-coating, and digital printing
- material deposition
- chemical health and safety

Scientist 2 – Device Technology (£30,000 — £38,000)
For this role is essential you are educated to HNC or Foundation Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline plus significant industrial experience, or educated to Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline plus relevant industrial experience.
Duties include but are not limited to (please see the job description for full details):
- To build and maintain a network of relevant internal stakeholders, to represent self and the broader team as a credible professional in networks and groups.
- To set up, plan and execute experimental / pilot scale runs and analyse, interpret, and report the results of these within agreed timescales and standards and in accordance with project requirements
- To present and formally report experimental conclusions and supporting data for internal peer review and submission to clients, to appropriate timescales and standards.
- To actively engage in hazard studies / SRA studies and discussions, as appropriate to role level.
- To provide clearly documented records of technical data, decisions, methodologies, calculations, and software use in an appropriate format.
- To maintain and calibrate equipment to ensure it operates in a safe and efficient manner and is available to meet customer needs.
Senior Scientist 1 – Device Technology (£35,000 — £43,000)
For this role, it is essential you are educated to Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline plus significant industrial experience, or educated to Master Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline plus relevant industrial experience, or educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline plus some industrial experience. Duties include:
- To identify new technical developments and trends, and translate these into building blocks for opportunities within the business unit, initiating the creation of (new) technological innovations/applications.
- To utilise own expert knowledge to assist in translating business unit strategy into practice through the delivery of plans to achieve business unit objectives.
- To build, maintain and exploit a network of relevant external stakeholders, customers, partners, research organisations, and authorities, to represent the business unit as a credible specialist in networks, identifying opportunities for future projects and developments.
- To formulate and present possible solution directions and issue advice upon request or at own initiative, beginning to build an internal reputation as a reliable and credible source.
- Be able to actively demonstrate in-depth technical and theoretical knowledge in at least one area and be viewed as a specialist by peers.
- Can provide examples of actively building cross-team and business unit collaboration to achieve desired results.
- Be able to actively participate in diverse or complex technical activities where it is necessary to use your own initiative and judgment.
Senior Scientist 2 – Device Technology (£40,000 — £48,000)
For this role, it is essential you are educated to degree level (or equivalent) in Engineering or relevant scientific discipline with considerable industrial experience in a related field, or educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline plus some industrial experience. Duties include:
- To build, maintain and exploit a network of relevant external stakeholders, customers, partners, research organisations, and authorities, to represent the business unit and self as a credible expert, identifying opportunities for future projects and developments.
- To formulate and present possible solutions, providing advice upon request or at own initiative, building an internal reputation as a reliable and credible authority.
- Be able to demonstrate evidence of building knowledge sharing and network building practice across teams and organisations to achieve desired results.
- Be able to actively demonstrate in-depth technical and theoretical knowledge in device technology and can participate at a high level in more than one area. Is viewed as an authority in at least one area by peers and managers.
- Is able to take responsibility for diverse or complex technical activities where it is necessary to use own initiative and judgment, implementing innovative solutions in complex situations.
For these roles, it would be great if you are a member of a relevant professional body, and candidates with knowledge and experience in electronic device operation and fabrication experience would be particularly welcome. It is also desirable to possess medical device ISO standards including ISO9001, IS013485, ISO 14971, and IEC 60601 – 1, and the development of sensors relevant to HealthTech applications.
