Why this role is important for CPI’s work

CPI is currently recruiting for an experienced Principal Process Engineer to join the well-established and growing Process Technology team based at NETPark, Sedgefield.

This is a great opportunity to join CPI and apply the knowledge and skills you have gained throughout your career to develop new and novel processes and technologies across a range of industries.

The Principal Process Engineer role will suit you if you enjoy the challenge of working in a continually changing environment, dealing with and managing uncertainty, learning new technologies and processes and using your technical knowledge to solve new and complex problems. Projects range in size from providing consultancy to early-stage developments for SMEs to undertaking process optimisation and design work for large multinational companies, with many of the projects involving developing new technologies that have never existed on a commercial scale.

In the role of Principal Process Engineer, you will provide Process Engineering expertise to identify, develop and lead the delivery of large-scale/complex projects in strategic, and commercial space.

Depending on previous experience you may also line manage up to 4 Process Engineers.

You will support the growing Process Engineering capability within CPI by disseminating and developing your own areas of knowledge, mentoring less experienced Process Engineers and improving systems to capture best practice. You will be a credible technical expert for the organisation, drawing upon and developing a broad range of technical know-how to provide advice and solutions to a range of internal and external stakeholders.

The Process Technology Team is part of CPI’s Formulation business unit, the team is made up of a number of Scientists and Engineers, whose expertise covers many areas of the chemical process industry (organic, inorganic, large and small scales), and brings a unique perspective to the solving of a wide range of practical process issues. The team looks at the technical transfer of lab-scale process from client to CPI, investigates and optimises the process chemistry, batch scale-up and continuous process design, and designs full-scale commercial plant. The team also leads on chemical and process safety.

The team has worked on a variety of projects across a range of industries including:

Designing, running and optimising a pilot plant for a new continuous graphene oxide purification process, and producing a front-end process engineering design

Undertaking a preliminary process design and economic assessment for a process that produces new battery material

Undertaking a technology scale-up assessment and advising the customer on the development of a new air-cleaning technology

Key activities in the role of Principal Process Engineer will include but are not limited to:

Act as a technical expert for the organisation, developing a broad range of technical know-how to provide advice and solutions to a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Work within a multi-disciplined team of engineers, scientists and physicists to develop new processes and technologies across a range of industries.

Provide Process Engineering expertise to identify, develop and lead the delivery of large-scale/complex projects.

Responsible for the setup, plan and execute experimental / pilot scale runs as required and analyse, interpret and report the results.

Formulate and present solutions to a range of stakeholders, using in-depth technical knowledge to provide up-to-date advice to managers.

Utilise your expert knowledge to inform the technology strategy at the Business Unit level, translating this into practice through the creation of deliverable plans to achieve business unit objectives.

Work collaboratively with Business Development and technical colleagues, providing support relating to realistic proposals/project developments and direct customer engagement including seeking out and engaging in business development opportunities.

Coach, develop and support less experienced Process Engineers and colleagues, (both technically and behaviourally) to help them reach their potential and act as a mentor to senior colleagues across the organisation.

Build, influence and collaborate with a network of relevant (inter)national external stakeholders, customers, partners, research organisations and authorities, to represent CPI as the technical expert in networks and discuss and lobby for projects and future developments.

Engage in hazard studies/safety risk assessment studies and discussions.

Responsible for providing clearly documented records of technical data, decisions, methodologies, calculations and software use.

Keep up to date with developments in technological innovations/applications and/or legislative and SHE-related changes, ensuring implementation and application of new best practice and/or knowledge.
