Why this role is important for CPI’s work

In response to significant growth in CPIs Biologics business unit, based at Darlington, an exciting opportunity has been created for an experienced Scientist to join the growing Microbial Upstream processing team. The role is offered on a full-time basis, with flexibility around start and finish times.

With an ever-expanding portfolio of projects in delivery and in the pipeline, which span across a breadth of expression systems, product types and customers, it is a great opportunity for a Scientist to be a part of and steer the future development of the Microbial upstream team. We are seeking a versatile and enthusiastic Scientist who will contribute to the technical delivery of Microbial Culture-focused projects which encompasses the strain development, process design, optimisation and scale-up of upstream processes from bench to pilot scale. This role is an opportunity to work across a variety of expression platforms, from classic yeast through to bacterial microorganisms which span both traditional fermentation and novel processes (e.g. Microbiome related organisms or Cell-free expression platforms). Thus, assisting the development and production of conventional and novel product types, including a range of recombinant proteins, biopesticides, RNA and therapeutic proteins.

Responsibilities:

Contribute to the delivery of client-facing (collaborative and commercial) projects including experimental design, execution and stakeholder management.

Strain construction and characterisation, including culture growth and productivity optimisation from shake flask to fermentation

Focus on the design, development and scale-down/scale-up of upstream processes.

Operation of reusable or single-use bioreactors for microbial cell culture applications.

Design and operation of the high-throughput system for DoE applications (E.g. ambr250).

Performing appropriate process analytics as required to support and assess experiment and batch performance.

Documentation writing, data interpretation and statistical analysis.

The person we are seeking

You will be educated to a minimum of HNC or Foundation Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/​Engineering discipline plus hold relevant industrial experience at a senior level, ideally, you will be educated to Degree level or above (or equivalent) plus hold significant industrial experience.

You will also have the following experience:

  • Expertise and practical understanding of microbial strain construction, selection, and characterisation.
  • Handling non-pathogenic organisms, microbial growth analysis and methodology.
  • Experience with microbial expression platforms, from Gram-negative/Gram-positive bacteria to anaerobes and yeast strains (e.g. E. coli, B. subtilis, Lactobacillus, S. cerevisiae and/​or Pichia Pastoris).
  • Application of design of experiments methodologies or other statistical applications to inform experimental design.
  • Experience with being the lead in experimental execution or technical project delivery whether customer-orientated or establishing innovative solutions to solve industrial challenges.
  • Experience in the operation and troubleshooting of single-use and/​or reusable bioreactor systems would be highly desirable.
  • Experience in the operation of high-throughput bioreactor systems such as the ambr250 would be highly desirable.
  • Expertise in the process development and/​or manufacture of recombinant proteins at bench or pilot scale would be highly desirable.
  • Problem-solving skills and proactive attitude when faced with unexpected challenges or results.
  • Team player and flexible approach to project time management.
