Why this role is important for CPI’s work
CPI has an opportunity for an experienced Scientist to join the Analytical & Formulation team in the role of Team Leader. The role is based at CPI’s Biologics business unit based in Darlington. The Analytical & Formulation Team works on analytical method development and formulation across the range of Biologics products, from mAbs, and recombinant proteins to AAV and mRNA. Within formulations, we’ve worked on in-process and final formulation of conventional and emerging modalities, alongside supporting the development of novel PAT for formulation development. The role is internally referred to as Team Leader: Formulation Fill& Finish.
Reporting to the Analytical & Formulation group Manager, the role of Team Leader involves a blend of technical delivery and management of a team of scientists where the individual will be responsible for team development, formulation technical leadership and training, as well as team progression, and growth. Working in collaboration with colleagues within the team, this is a fantastic opportunity to influence and shape the team’s growth through managing the delivery of business-as-usual activities as well as identifying areas for continuous improvement and capability enhancement. With an ever-expanding portfolio of projects in delivery and in the pipeline, which span across a breadth of expression systems, product types, and customers, it is a great opportunity for an individual to be a part of and steer the future development of the Analytical & Formulation group.
The CPI Biologics technical group works on a varied portfolio of projects, working with a wide range of products including monoclonal antibodies, viral vectors, recombinant proteins, microbial therapeutics and synthetically produced nucleic acids using conventional and advanced manufacturing approaches. The work of the group is diverse, examples including:
- Supporting scale of mRNA manufacturing processes with the Vaccine’s taskforce (VTF)
- Developing a manufacturing process for a vaccine-like particle vaccine product
- Development of advanced process control to accelerate drug manufacture
- Optimisation of media for in-vitro cultured meat production
Supervise a team, ensuring delivery of departmental goals, through appropriate delegation and providing feedback and motivation to team members.
Design and delivery of formulation screens to identify optimal excipients for biologic product stability and activity.
Completion of lyophilisation and freezing studies on biologic molecules to identify conditions for long-term product storage and stability.
To perform analytical characterisation of biopharmaceuticals with in-house platform methodology to confirm performance.
Application of your broad scientific knowledge to projects and client programs.
Providing training, mentoring and supervision to other members of the team.
Maintaining knowledge of new practices and procedures from relevant literature and other sources.
The person we are seeking
You will be educated to a minimum of HNC or Foundation Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering discipline plus hold significant industrial experience at a senior level. Ideally, you will be educated to a Degree level in a Scientific/Engineering discipline(or equivalent) or above and hold significant relevant industrial experience.
It is essential you have in-depth and comprehensive experience and understanding of biologics formulation and fill-finish activities including screening of formulation components and lyophilisation conditions.
Experience in analytical techniques for biologics characterisation including and not limited to UPLC/HPLC, sub-particle analysis, ELISA, qPCR, SDS-PAGE, cIEF, and capillary electrophoresis is also essential for this role.
You also must be able to exhibit professional mastery of principles and practices in formulation development, gained in academic or industrial environments, be comfortable using your own judgment and initiative within standard engineering/scientific practices, as well as understanding when to seek advice from colleagues.
It is essential you can demonstrate evidence of knowledge sharing and network-building practice across teams or groups, with the ability to apply theoretical and practical scientific/engineering methods to contribute to business activities. Can provide examples of actively utilising cross-team collaboration to achieve desired results
You will also actively demonstrate in-depth technical and theoretical knowledge in at least one area and be viewed as a specialist in this area by peers. That you can take responsibility for diverse or complex technical activities where it is necessary to use your own initiative and judgment, implementing innovative solutions in complex situations.

An active member of a professional body, engaging with peers beyond CPI.
Experience of supervising a small group or team within an operational environment.
Experience with using appropriate computational tools to develop process models (mechanistic and/or statistical) to optimise processes.
Have significant, technical expertise in purification and downstream processing.
Familiarity with QbD and DoE and application to experimental design.
Experience with high-throughput screening using automated liquid handling systems.
