CPI is delighted to be recruiting for the newly created role of Senior Research Scientist – Automation, who will join the growing High Throughput, Informatics and Modelling team, part of CPIs Formulation business unit based at NETPark, Sedgefield. This role will give you the opportunity to join an Automation team established in working in the battery and FMCG spaces. The role is to strengthen the existing capabilities of the Automation team and in support of new capabilities being developed at CPI in Nanotherapeutics in the formation of a Liquid Nanoparticle Centre of Excellence.

New UK collaboration ICE-Batt to optimise battery technology

In the position of Senior Research Scientist, you will be joining a team to apply automation and analysis techniques to problems in the Formulation sector. The role will give provide you with the opportunity to work with our stakeholders and implement our state-of-the-art automation and analytical, instruments and techniques, to optimise and innovate a new generation of product solutions. As a (Senior) Research Scientist, you will be in a leading role responsible for the technical and scientific support of CPI’s current automation systems which have been designed for supporting projects in the battery and FMCG sectors. This will include generating and optimising the workflows used by the automation kit, maintaining, running and upskilling in relevant instrumentation. You will work collaboratively on research projects, analysing and reporting data back to the project lead and organising work with the automation team. Future opportunities may exist in the team to get involved in support of a new automation system which is being designed to optimise the formation of lipid nanoparticles for nanotherapeutic applications.

Key responsibilities:

To lead the technical delivery of experimental programmes of work on automation platforms and high throughput equipment.

To write and optimise workflows for automation project work and review them.

To lead the maintenance, calibration, safety and quality, for the effective running of automation.

To present and formally report experimental conclusions and supporting data for internal peer review and submission to clients, to agreed timescales and standards.

To actively engage in hazard studies / SRA studies and discussions, as appropriate to role level. 

To set up, plan and execute experimental / pilot scale runs and analyse, interpret and report the results of these within agreed timescales and quality standards, and following project/​client requirements. 

To be responsible for providing clearly documented records of technical data, decisions, methodologies, calculations and software used in an agreed format.

To take ownership in agreeing to weekly work plans with the line manager, project manager(s) and other relevant stakeholders, and delivering the plan to the agreed schedule.

To maintain consistent and documented compliance with all relevant Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE), quality and best practice requirements. 

To keep self up to date with developments in areas relevant to the role, and/​or legislative and SHE-related changes as communicated by senior colleagues, ensuring understanding of these and any associated new best practice, methods or techniques. 

The person we are seeking

You are required to be educated to a minimum of HNC or Foundation Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/​Engineering discipline plus significant industrial experience, it is highly desirable that candidates are educated to Masters/​PhD level in a Scientific/​Engineering discipline with relevant industrial experience.

Experience in a lab-based role through a combination of either industry or academia, with demonstrable experience being part of a technical team to deliver projects is essential.

Professional mastery of principles and practices in one or more are essential:

Advanced drug delivery systems such as vehicles for mRNA transfection. 

The production/​characterisation of lipid nanoparticles. 

Automation in the production/​characterisation of formulations (in sectors relevant to experience e.g. Battery, FMCG). 

You will hold demonstrable evidence of knowledge sharing and network-building practice across teams or groups, the ability to apply theoretical and practical scientific methods to contribute to business activities: 

You will also be able to provide examples of actively utilising cross-team collaboration to achieve desired results, able to demonstrate confidence in using your judgement and initiative within standard engineering practices, as well as an understanding of when to seek advice from colleagues.

Its highly desirable that you have:

Chartered status with a relevant professional institution.

Member of a relevant professional body. 

Understanding/​skills in experimental planning and optimisation using the design of experiments. 

Understanding/​skills in data acquisition and analysis; Use of statistics, management of large data sets, and effective data logging systems. 

The additional skills and experience are required for candidates applying for the Senior Research Scientist level.

Actively demonstrates in-depth technical and theoretical knowledge and is viewed as a specialist in this area by peers in at least one area and is able to apply this to automation e.g.

Automation in the production/​characterisation of formulations (in sectors relevant to experience).

Advanced drug delivery systems such as vehicles for mRNA transfection.

The production/​characterisation of lipid nanoparticles. 

Can evidence leading technical teams to deliver projects.

Actively participates in diverse or complex technical activities where it is necessary to use own initiative and judgement. 

It is highly desirable that you are:

An active member of a professional body, engaging with peers beyond CPI

Skilled (demonstrated by use in previous roles) in experimental planning and optimisation using design of experiments. 

Skilled in data acquisition and analysis; Use of statistics, management of large data sets, and effective data logging systems. 

Knowledgeable of the application of digitally enabled technologies and industry 4.0 to your background.
