Why this role is important for CPI’s work

In response to significant growth and staff progression in our Biologics business unit, an exciting opportunity has arisen to expand our Upstream Processing team. We are recruiting for a Team Leader to join the Upstream team to play an important role in the growth of the business unit.

Why this role is important for CPI’s work

With an ever-expanding portfolio of projects in delivery and in the pipeline, which span across a breadth of expression systems, product types and customers, it is a great opportunity for an individual to be a part of and steer the future development of the upstream team. The individual we are seeking will both contribute and lead the technical delivery of upstream focused projects which encompasses the process design, development and scale-up of upstream processes from bench to pilot scale. The role will offer opportunities to work across a breadth of conventional and novel product types such as proteins and gene therapy products expressed across a range of expression systems.

We are seeking a Team Leader who has significant experience in the development of Microbial or Mammalian Cell Culture processes as well as a track record of leading teams for the delivery of customer-facing projects. The role of Team Leader – Upstream will involve a blend of technical delivery and management of a team of scientists where the successful candidate will be responsible for team development, progression, and growth. Working in collaboration with colleagues within the team, this is a fantastic opportunity to influence and shape the team’s growth through managing the delivery of business-as-usual activities as well as identifying areas for continuous improvement and capability enhancement.

Key responsibilities:

Contribute to/lead the delivery of client-facing (collaborative and commercial) projects including experimental design, execution and stakeholder management.

Line management of a team of scientists to provide professional development support for both individual and team growth (up to five direct reports).

Resource management, scheduling and planning to meet project deliverables and ensure project timelines are maintained.

Training of colleagues in techniques and processes required to consolidate learning and establish a versatile and flexible workforce.

Focus on the design, development and scale-down/scale-up of upstream processes.

Operation of reusable or single-use bioreactors for either mammalian cell culture or microbial fermentations.

The person we are seeking

The successful candidate should be educated to a minimum of degree level (or equivalent) and possess the relevant experience in an industrial or Pharma/Biotech facing role. We are looking for an individual with experience in the following areas:

Significant experience and expertise in the process development and/or manufacture of biopharmaceuticals from bench to pilot scale.

Familiarity in a range of expression systems relevant to biotherapeutic applications such as E.coli, Pichia, Saccharomyces, CHO, HEK293, insect and/or primary cells.

Theoretical and practical expertise in at least one area of specialism related to upstream processing.

Experience with leading technical project delivery whether customer orientated or establishing innovative solutions to solve industrial challenges.

Experience in the operation and troubleshooting of single-use and/or reusable bioreactor systems would be highly desirable.

Experience in the operation of high-throughput bioreactor systems such as the ambr15 and/or ambr250 would be highly desirable.
