Why this role is important for CPI’s work

We are looking to recruit an experienced Senior Electronics Engineer to join our growing team working on the development of advanced sensors or sensor systems for use in internet of things applications and in medical devices. Key technologies include: low power wireless communications such as BLE, WiFi and LPWAN; Microcontrollers utilising ARM Cortex‑M; MEMS sensors; Analog sensors and circuitry including bespoke printed strain gauges and force sensitive resistors; photonic sensors such as PPG.

The Senior Engineer will be working in a multi-project environment where we help our clients to realise their product ideas from concept through to pilot manufacturing and all stages between. You will be responsible for leading the design of electronics for the prototype and proof of concept of electronic devices. In this role you will have to work closely with external clients to accurately define their requirements and with the CPI project team of electronics engineers, product designers and scientists to deliver functionality to the required quality standards. As a Senior Engineer you will be viewed as an authority in your technical area, offering innovative solutions at business-unit level and contributing extensively to development and improvement activities. You will have access to excellent laboratory facilities for design, integration and testing of the electronics at CPI’s National Healthcare Photonics Centre in Sedgefield and our Internet of Things Application Centre facility in Newton Aycliffe. Previous experience with the design and realisation for medical devices would be highly desirable for this role.

The person we are seeking

We are looking for someone with good technical expertise and background knowledge, with proven technical problem-solving ability, who can take responsibility for diverse or complex technical activities when necessary and to use their own initiative and judgement, implementing innovative solutions in complex situations. 

It is essential that you are educated to at least degree level (or equivalent) in an Electronic Engineering discipline with additional relevant industrial experience in a senior role. You must be able to demonstrate professional mastery of the principles and practices in electronics design gained through career to date in an area of specialism.

The candidate must have good experience in: 

Electronic product design

Circuit board assembly for prototypes and small production runs

Digital and analog electronics design 

Practical use of simulation tools for electronic design

The candidate must have good knowledge and understanding of: 

Processes of electronic product development and realisation

The operation and design of electronic systems and circuits

Electronic device operation and assembly

Electronic sensors and measurement systems

Low-power wireless electronics design

It is desirable for the candidate to have experience in:

Design, development or manufacture of Industry 4.0 / IoT enabled products

Flexible electronics design

The design, development, or manufacture of medical devices or safety critical system

Practical use of automated and manual tools for surface mount electronics assembly

Maintaining design history files to ISO standards including ISO9001 and IS013485

Working knowledge of ISO 15288 or similar product development standards

RF design techniques
