Founded in 2004, CPI has always taken pride in the people we employ, our employees are critical to the work we do. Coming from all levels of academia and industry, they apply their expertise and innovative thinking to support the development of next-generation manufacturing.
Over the last 15 years the company has grown year on year, we have expanded our capabilities across a diverse range of high value markets, driving innovation and helping to reduce the risk and cost associated with product and process development. We have completed over 1200 projects with a total value of over £415 million, established 2,000 business collaborations; 60% of those are with SMEs, and have founded £170 million of innovation assets in the UK. How have we managed this? Well, the key to CPI’s success is undoubtably down to its people. Over the past 15 years CPI has grown from a workforce of two in a single office in Teesside, to seven state-of-the-art facilities across the UK employing over 400 highly skilled employees.
A lot has changed at CPI with the exponential growth of the workforce, but one thing has remained, our people are at the heart of what we do. We understand that in order to offer the best we must provide the best, we do this by continually investing in our people. Over the past 12 months alone CPI have invested nearly £500,000 in the learning and development of our people. This includes many learning opportunities, including degree and masters level qualifications, coaching and mentoring, skills development workshops and online learning. In fact, between 2018/2019, 20% of staff attended development programmes and 10% of our employees have been internally promoted.
In addition to this, in 2018 CPI became one of only 89 businesses headquartered in our region who have signed up to become a Real Living Wage employer. Investing in our people with the aim to enhance employee wellbeing and ensure that employees at all levels are rewarded with fair compensation.
CPI became a member of the 5% club in 2018, a dynamic movement of employer-members working to create a shared prosperity across the UK by driving ‘earn and learn’ skills training opportunities. CPI have surpassed the 5% mark required to become a member and now have 10.8% of our employees who are involved in apprenticeships or funded further educational courses. This includes CPI’s summer placement schemes, which have run successfully over the last four years, many of these students have go on to becoming permanent employees.
In addition to creating an environment to allow individuals to thrive we have a relentless focus on the health and safety of our employees. We ensure SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) is at the centre of all our business operations and our people matter plan focuses on the whole person not just the job that they do. In 2018/19 we saw no reportable lost time injuries, and staff at CPI are proactive in their reporting of positive SHE learning, ensuring prevention of potential hazards and continuous improvement of our working environment.
The past 15 years have been extremely positive for CPI, the growth and development of which would not have been possible without HR providing the best for our employees, attracting and retaining the best. Without our staff we are not CPI.
