Graphene has the potential to transform many products. Its electrical and thermal conductivity, optical purity and mechanical strength could be used in a wide range of materials such as inks, coatings and composites, sensors, flexible screens, high-capacity batteries and ultra-fast transistors. Ultimately, the full potential of graphene and its possible applications are not yet known but CPI’s Graphene Application Centre will help UK industry to identify the opportunities and capitalise on them.
The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is part of a consortium that aims to develop a low cost self-cleaning coating technology based on functionalised graphene, which once applied to industrial membranes increases the resistance to fouling or enhances ion removal.
A new partnership linking academia and a leading technology innovation centre could transform the way research is developed and attract investment to the North East region.
