CPI secure £2.5million UK and EU collaborative projects

23 May 2013

CPI is the UK’s National Centre for Printable Electronics. Focused on the development, scale-up and commercialisation of printable electronics applications, it is equipped with an extensive range of assets specifically chosen and developed to allow clients to understand how their products and processes perform under pilot manufacturing conditions.

CPI are currently involved in 4 EU based collaborative projects which include research institutes, SMEs and large multinationals. In addition, CPI are also working on a number of commercial projects with UK based companies. Work varies from small scale to 0.5m roll to roll production (using ALD and sputter technologies), with total project values accounting to up to over £20m in the next three years, with £2.5m direct support towards CPI.

The initial focus of CPI’s work is to develop clear flexible ultra barriers deposited on polymer substrates; a current red brick wall’ to the development of flexible electronic devices. Various processes will be incorporated into the development, with the aim to move towards full roll to roll pilot production. Applications of CPI’s work in barrier and encapsulation will lead to the roll to roll production of flexible devices such as photovoltaics, displays, sensors and solid state lighting.

CPI can offer access to a wide variety of vacuum and conventional coating assets and thin-film deposition systems. These include atomic layer deposition (ALD), sputter coating, and evaporation techniques. In addition, CPI has extensive characterisation equipment to analyse thin film coatings, material properties and surfaces. CPI is also heavily involved in the investigation of ultra barrier coatings through unique moisture permeation measurement capability.
