August 2010: CPI’s Printable Electronics Facility is to aid the manufacturing process of the UK's first printed lighting panel

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is supporting an initiative to develop the UK's first printed lighting panel.  The initiative has received government funding and will officially start in November this year.

The manufacturing process to make a polymer light-emitting diode (PLED) luminaire will be proved and tested at CPI’s Printable Electronics Technology Centre (PETEC).  PETEC is one of two technology business units that form part of CPI and is a UK national prototyping facility for the development and commercialisation of printed electronics.   The manufacture of the PLED will be made possible by the installation of a large-area coating line at PETEC in early 2011.

August 2010: Leading Biotechnologist joins Durham University with a Commercial Outlook

A new academic Chair has been created at Durham University to bring an enhanced commercial focus to innovations arising from research and development in biotechnology.

Professor Mike Theodorou, a leading anaerobic microbiologist, has been appointed as The CPI Chair in Industrial Biotechnology.

The newly-created position is being sponsored by the Wilton-based Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), the UK technology innovation centre for the Process Industries which manages the National Industrial Biotechnology Facility (NIBF). CPI has market and technology understanding to develop and prototype clients’ material or processes quickly and efficiently with minimal risk. It focuses primarily on two technology areas - printable electronics and industrial biotechnology.

Mike Theodorou, who was previously based at Aberystwyth University, has recently developed a new, patented process for continuous anaerobic processing.
