Plastic electronics is a means of using lower cost, more sustainable technology to manufacture tomorrow’s electronic equipment. Projected world sales of £30 billion by 2015 demonstrate the size of the market for early entrants to the sector. A key component for delivering this technology is the flexible substrate.
PETEC Wilton houses the Flexible Electronics Substrate Facility. This includes a Class 1000 Clean Room housing a Reel-to-Reel Vacuum Sputter Coater and facilities for testing the barrier properties of coatings applied to plastic substrates. Recent innovations and development at the Wilton Centre have included tailored substrates that are used in the manufacture of flexible photovoltaic cells (solar panels), thin film transistor displays (TFT screens) and solid-state energy-efficient lighting.
