The UK faces tough challenges to meet its future energy needs and commitments to reduce CO2 emissions. At PETEC we believe an important part of the strategy should be focussed on developing new renewable energy technologies that are commercially viable. Organic PV has the potential to achieve this low cost target for energy generation within a 10 year timescale, and is a technology that can be scaled in production much more extensively than crystalline Si photocells due to its ability to be manufactured in a continuous R2R process.
PETEC's Wilton coater facility is already gearing up to the challenge of developing continuous processes for production of OPV and other thin film PV technologies. Current developments include deposition of tailored conductor layers on substrates, and also the development of effective barrier layers that will protect cells from the elements for many years of lifetime.
