GROWING ALGAE PUSHES THE GREEN AGENDA

Innovative idea to use algae could reduce CO2 emissions, provide a source of biofuel and crop soil conditioner

Arup and the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) are moving ahead with their efforts to develop pioneering engineering systems to scale up a novel idea that could revolutionise carbon capture.

The organisations have developed a system of using algae, which draws on the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by power stations and factories. It closes the carbon cycle, using wastes to produce environmentally friendly bio-based products, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and artificial chemicals in crop growth.

Supacycle, supported by CPI, enables separation of paper, metal, plastic and glass waste in household bins

Unlike existing refuse collection, Supacycle enables separation of paper, metal, plastic and glass waste from household to bin and throughout the collection process, avoiding the need to send waste to a factory to be manually sorted.

The project gained high praise by Eric Randall director of leading recycling firm Bryson Recycling, who said “The Supacycle approach is very innovative - it shows fresh thinking along with a good and detailed understanding of this business.

The project has benefited from support offered by Renew, an initiative that assists in delivering commercial energy and environmental technology projects across North East England, who provided advice and funding support for Supacycle to obtain international patents.

Battle for EU CO² cash

A DECISION on major EU funding for a £1.5bn Tees project to capture and store carbon under the seabed is expected in the next few months.

The Eston Grange Power Project, which is earmarked for a South Tees site, would create 1,500 construction and 150 permanent jobs for the Tees Valley.
