Dr Chris Dowle PhD, Csci, Cchem, MRSC, FSB
Director of Sustainable Processing and Advanced Manufacturing (SUSPROC)

Following his PhD at the University of Strathclyde in 1988, Chris joined ICI as a research chemist and then developed his career across a range of roles including analytical chemistry and operations support. Chris has also been involved in managing GLP laboratories, moving through into business development and change management. Chris has worked for engineering and process technology companies in positions from sales through to business management. He has sectorial experience of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, materials, and biotechnology.

At the Centre for Process Innovation he is managing a portfolio of projects in his role as Director of Sustainable Processing. These include projects in quite diverse areas such as marine biotechnology through to continuous crystallisation. The work of the Centre Process Innovation (CPI) is focused upon translating invention across the difficult transformation into innovation. His collaborative project is a high-pressure three-phase continuous oscillatory baffled flow reactor that has been demonstrated for commercial application for transformations such as reduction and oxidation. This has won CPI a prestigious Technology Company of the Year award in April 2006. The most significant project in Chris’ portfolio is the National Industrial Biotechnology Facility which facilitates the renaissance of bioprocessing for sustainable production of a wide range of new materials.
